Prof. in the news…and my picture!

As my friend Lindsey pointed out on Facebook today, the most recent article of the Cornell Engineering Magazine contains an article about my Cornell professor, Dr. Natalie Mahowald, and her research. I made it into the magazine in the form of a picture! It’s a really good article that reminds us how complex and interconnected the climate system is. It gives examples on how something as seemingly innocuous as dust, when taken on a global scale, can have a measurable effect on climate and on biogeochemical cycles (which also affects climate). Even though we understand a great deal about the earth system there is still a ton of interesting research left to do (Hurray for job opportunities!).

I really liked the work that I did for Dr. Mahowald (I even wrote a short article about it here), and I’m still trying to figure out if and how I can tie it or other areas of  atmospheric science into my MESPOM degree. So far in the program there has been a lot of general information about science, policy, and management, but not a lot of coverage on how to effectively combine these fields to understand environmental issues in a more holistic way. I’m looking forward to what next semester brings in terms on integrating these fields.

PS – If there are any Cornell Meteorology Alumni reading this check out the latest issue of Ithacation! CCAMS seems to be really active this year, thanks in no small part to Co-Presidents Joseph and Sage I’m sure! I wish I could make it back to Alumni Weekend this year, but a transatlantic flight for the weekend is a little out of my price range…
