Road Trip to Croatia
I’ve been aware for a couple weeks that this past weekend was going to be a long weekend. It’s not a holiday in Hungary, it just happens to be how my classes worked out. So, I’ve been trying to plan a trip for this weekend for a little while now. I eventually came up with a pretty well developed plan to go to Vienna, unfortunately lack of funds and a banking issued nixed that pretty quickly. So, I just accepted that I’d spend the long weekend getting ahead in work.
Lucky for me things took and unexpected turn Friday afternoon when my friend Shannon invited me to go on a trip to Croatia with her and her friend. Her friend was driving and all I had to pay for was food and accommodation. That’s all I needed to hear (except for a little reassurance about landmines), and I was off.
We left early Saturday morning and reached the border in only two hours, from there it was another 5 hours or so to the Istria Peninsula. We explored two cities there, and had dinner (I never thought I’d miss seafood…even if it wasn’t what I expected) before getting accommodation in the second city. The Croatian countryside is absolutely beautiful. Tall hills give way to amazing vistas of the Adriatic Sea (it’s even more dramatic when you come out of a tunnel). I haven’t been to Italy (yet), but the small cities we explored are exactly what I’d imagine a small Italian town on the sea to look like.
Sunday morning we woke up early and drove to the Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO Word Heritage site. It was breathtaking. The pictures don’t do it justice (yes that it the natural water color). The park is a series of lakes at different elevations connected by waterfalls. Apparently, we weren’t even there during the best time of the year. I want to go back again, and see the waterfall at their peak and maybe go swimming in the Adriatic Sea while I’m there.
We needed to be back by Sunday night, so after hiking around the park for a few hours we drove back to Budapest. I’ll try and post more pictures tomorrow.
