Following celebrations and goodbyes in Budapest, and some frantic packing, my classmates and I made our way to the University of the Aegean at Mytilene via Athens. Most of us flew to Athens on Aegean Airlines, from there half continued on via ferry and half by air. I organized most of the flights for my classmates, and, unfortunately, booking group tickets was more difficult than I expected. Thankfully, I had a lot of help from Brigitta from BCD Travel at the Central European University. I also have a lot more respect for travel agents after that experience. There is a lot you can do booking directly though the airlines, but there are still some things that only travel agents can do (like group tickets, locking in fares and holding onto seats for a couple days).
The Budapest -> Athens -> Mytilene route required a ~20 hour layover for those taking a ferry, and a ~24 hour layover for those flying to the island. I think most of us enjoyed the opportunity to explore Athens. Although, since we were moving to Greece for over a month, we did have to lug a decent amount of stuff along with us. Still, we got a hostel for the night, and, the next day, got a guide to show us as much of the city as we could before our departure. We saw most of the major sites (Acropolis, Olympic stadium, etc), but there was a lot more I wanted to see. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to go back after classes ended…
