Given the fact that his videos have been seen by over 43 million people, there’s a good chance that you’ve see at least one of Matt Harding’s videos. Just in case I wanted to make sure I share them here too. Matt’s videos are some of my favorite, most inspirational things I’ve ever watched. They are simple and awe inspiring. Watching them makes me want to go out, explore the world, and meet new people.
I love the evolution of his videos from dancing in front of landmarks to dancing with people. Sightseeing is one small part of travelling. Here’s a quote I like from his website,
He mostly just danced in front of iconic landmarks, but along the way he went to a country called Rwanda, and since there aren’t any landmarks in Rwanda that you’d want to dance in front of, instead he just went to a small village and danced with a bunch of kids. The kids joined him immediately and without hesitation. That ended up being the best thing that happened to him on the trip. The kids taught him that people are a whole lot more interesting than old landmarks and monuments.
I agree with the idea traveling is more than seeing a new place. I have pictures of me in front of famous buildings and amazing vistas, but the best memories I have are about the people I was with or met along the way. From wandering around with my roommate in his hometown of Seoul, having coffee with an Irish teacher on sabbatical in a cafe with an amazing view (the feature pic for this article), to having a few too many with a couple of German exchange student at a hostel bar in a tiny New Zealand town. These are the experiences that impact me the most.
I can’t wait to explore Hungary and meet my fellow classmates, as well as the city I’ll be calling home for almost a year. In the meantime I’ve still got a lot of planning to do, and some amazing videos to keep me going…
